Ulla Fredriksson was born in Norrköping in 1972. She studied at Kungliga Konsthögskolan between 2000–2005 and has made public designs for, among others, Norrköping City Hall, Vrinnevi Hospital in Norrköping and now most recently Vega commuter train station in Haninge.
The work on station Vega is called "Flos solis maior" (Large sunflower in Latin) and consists of 512 glass globes and porcelain luminaires from Ifö Electric which are mounted on the southern end wall of the station building. The globes are of varying size between 150-200 mm and together forms a 6.5 m large "star". These are connected by "organically" drawn electric cables that power the LED lights that illuminate the artwork. The LED lights are dimmed slightly up and down in brightness to create an illusion of a "glowing" globe.
The starting point for the work has been a sunflower seed stand where each seed is represented by a globe filled with light. Close up, the work is perceived as a cluster of balls placed in an intricate pattern that constantly changes slightly. In the background, one can discern a network of electric cables that form an organic fund with its winding lines. At a distance, the bright spots melt together forming a coherent globe, a star, a sun.
